HiM started out as the solo recording project of Doug Scharin, whose excellent drumming we've heard with Rex, June of '44, Out In Worship, Codeine, and others. At the Rexville loft in Brooklyn, using only a four track, Doug would lay down some seriously thick dub on the minimal tip, with a heavy emphasis on layered rhythms. A move to Chicago brought in some additional members and an incredible and different album, 'Sworn Eyes'. Stereophile Magazine called Sworn Eyes one of the top "66 records to die for" of all time. But these gorgeous cyclic mallet patterns and expertly-effected percussion tracks were quickly abondoned in another surprising move: another lineup change designed to install a permenant, touring band, and an album of fast, funky, afro-beat textures with blaring sax called 'Our Point Of Departure' (Perishable).
Other HiM material can be found on labels like Perishable, Word Sound, & Southern.
