Alex Blake is easily one of the top five upright bass players ever. Having toured with Sun Ra when he was sixteen, he went on from there to lengthy stints with Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, & McCoy Tyner, to name a few, and for the last 7 years he's been touring and recording with Randy Weston, as well as the legendary Coltrane sideman and psychedelic saxophone innovator himself, Mr. Pharoah Sanders. The way Alex uses flamenco techniques to make an upright bass sound like water, the rhythms he bangs with his fist on the strings and his foot on the floor, the freedom with which he sings all of his solos as he plays.....just watching him play is a joy in itself...
